System Maintenance and Basic Steps for Issues with System or Applications
Important Checklist Before Submitting Support Requests for VollaOS
IMPORTANT: Create a backup of all important data and files on an external storage medium and verify its recoverability!
- If YES: Proceed with this checklist.
- If NO: First create backups!
When encountering issues with the VollaOS operating system or individual applications, it is recommended to complete the following checklist before submitting a support request.
Step 1: Is VollaOS up to date?
Check the version of your VollaOS:
App overview → Settings → About phone → Android version and VollaOS version
Here you will find the VollaOS version, Android version, upgrade date, and the last source update.
If updates are available that are newer than the installed version, installing only the newest one and not in chronological order is enough.
Updating VollaOS
- Create or verify a backup of all important data.
- Ensure a stable internet connection.
- Battery charge should be at least 70%.
- Remove the SD card.
- Settings → System → System updates → 3-dot menu (top right) → Settings → Disable “Prioritize update process.”
- Settings → System → System updates → Tap the rotating arrow (top right) to check for updates.
- Ensure the screen remains active (in quick settings tiles, set “Caffeine” to ∞ by tapping multiple times).
- Start the update process: Settings → System → System updates → “VollaOS xyz” → Download.
- After a successful download: Install and then restart.
Step 2: Are my F-Droid applications up to date?
Check the F-Droid applications:
App overview → F-Droid → Menu bar → Tasks (bell icon) → Swipe down once.
At the top of the screen, “Package source update” should appear. After a brief update period (spinning arrow), a list of apps to be updated will be displayed and updated.
Step 3: Are my Aurora Store applications up to date?
Note: The Aurora Store itself is updated via the F-Droid Store. If the Aurora Store does not start or anonymous login is not possible, first complete Step 2. Check the Aurora Store applications:
App overview → Store → Updates
A list of apps to be updated will be displayed. Tap “Update all” or update each app individually by tapping “Update.” After the download, a confirmation prompt for installation should appear, which must be confirmed.
Important Note on Aurora Store Usage
To prevent F-Droid apps from being replaced by Aurora Store apps (often with trackers or Google services), regularly check:
Aurora Store → Settings (gear icon, top right) → Blocklist management
In the app list, place a checkmark next to each app sourced from the F-Droid Store to exclude it from Aurora Store updates.
Workaround for Issues with App Search in Aurora Store
If the app search in Aurora Store temporarily does not work:
- Open Aurora Store (first grant the app permission to open links from play.google.com: Settings → Apps → Aurora → Open by default → Check play.google.com).
- Open the Fennec Browser.
- Open the Google Play Store page in the browser.
- Search for the desired app.
- Access the app’s page in the Google Play Store (not the search results page).
- Browser’s 3-dot menu → “Open with app.”
- Aurora Store will open with the app.
- Install the app.
Issues with Anonymous Login in Aurora Store
If error messages occur during anonymous login:
- System settings → Apps → All apps → Aurora.
- Force stop the app.
- Storage and cache → Clear cache and clear storage.
- Reopen Aurora Store and log in anonymously again.
Apps installed via F-Droid (e.g., Telegram, Signal) should not be updated in the Aurora Store. Add these to the blocklist in Aurora Store settings, as otherwise the FOSS version will be replaced by the Google version.
Before switching the Signal app version, always create a backup within the app, as otherwise all chat histories will be lost. Downgrading (e.g., from the Google to the FOSS version) requires deleting all app data in the system settings.
Step 4: Does the issue with the app persist?
After creating a backup of the app data, perform the following steps:
App overview → Settings → Apps & notifications → Show all (number) apps → Select the affected app → “Force stop” → Storage and cache → Clear cache and clear data.
Warning: This step deletes some or all user data and app settings. Back up all user data externally beforehand.
Restart the app afterward from the app overview.
Issues with the Contacts App
For database errors (missing entries, address book disappeared, etc.), find instructions for resetting the database here: Instructions.
Step 5: Does the issue with the operating system or an app persist?
If steps 1 to 4 do not resolve the issue, consider the following options:
Resetting a Faulty App Version
- Back up the app data.
- Reset the app to factory settings: Settings → Apps → All apps → Affected app → 3-dot menu (top right) → “Uninstall updates.”
- In the F-Droid Store:
- Settings (bottom right, gear icon) → Manage installed apps → Select the affected app → Versions (list) → Tap the desired version and install.
- Alternatively: Settings → Manage installed apps → Select the affected app → Update app.
- For advanced users only: Install the desired APK file from another source.
- If necessary, import the backed-up app data.
Additional Checks
- Check in the system settings whether all necessary permissions for the app have been granted.
- Check if Safe Mode is enabled (System settings). This may restrict activities. Disable it temporarily and adjust settings if needed.
- Use the search in the Volla Forum to find existing solutions.
- No solution found? Create a support request with a meaningful title in the VollaOS Forum.
- Need quick help? Visit the Volla User Community on Telegram or on Matrix.
Note: Use the search function with 2–3 keywords, as many issues have already been discussed. For new requests, specify the VollaOS version, affected app, and device model.
Community Note
The Telegram group, Matrix group, and Volla Forum are primarily managed by volunteer users. Please work through the checklist diligently, communicate politely and patiently, and show appreciation with a “please” and “thank you.”
